Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Lewis Carroll
"Fifth thousand" (so third edition). 19 x 13cm, original red cloth (rebacked). London, Macmillan and Co. 1867 [1866]
A very good copy, rebacked with the original spine laid down, cloth worn at points and bubbling a little in places, pages are mostly clean with occasional faint stains and light browning. A neat contemporary gift inscription is laid down on the front free endpaper.
The first edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was printed in June 1865. Carroll excitedly inscribed copies to his close friends and family, but in July the illustrator John Tenniel announced that he was unhappy with the "disgraceful printing" and demanded the suppression of all 2000 copies. Carroll agreed to have the book reprinted elsewhere (at great personal expense, since he was paying for all the costs) and went about trying to recall the few copies he had already sent to friends. The book was reprinted and published before the end of the year. Received warmly by reviewers, it sold well at first, then extremely well soon after. By August 1866, Macmillan were suggesting another print run, which would be printed with the number of the "thousand" on the title page. This copy, one of the "fifth thousand", is from the third edition overall, and the second to be sent out for sale. Though dated 1867 on the title page, this edition was released before Christmas of 1866.
