Nothing Personal
James Baldwin
Richard Avedon
First UK edition. 37 x 27.5 cm, original white boards with black title on silver ground, slipcase. London, Penguin Books. 1964
A very good copy with some pale, scattered marks to the covers, spine browned with some wear to extremities and cracking along hinges, though holding firm, slipcase worn at edges and browned.
This copy includes a postcard signed by Richard Avedon.
James Baldwin and Richard Avedon were contemporaries at DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, both contributing to the school magazine, The Magpie. They later lost touch, but when Avedon was asked to photograph Baldwin for an article in the early sixties he had the idea that they work together on a larger project. Baldwin agreed immediately and the result was this snapshot of America in 1964, combining Avedon's gorgeous black and white photographs with Baldwin's searing text.
